Summer Camp 2013 - 26 July to 2nd August

Roadford Lake, Devon - This year’s Summer Camp was at Roadford Lake in Devon. With over 730 acres of water, Roadford Lake is Devon’s largest reservoir; a spectacular lake set on the edge of Dartmoor between Okehampton and Launceston.  There are miles of footpaths and a cycleway which winds its way through a forest overlooking the Lake. From our pulling and sailing boats, kayaks and canoes we explored the beautiful scenery from the water.

In 2011 travelling down by coach, we took 40 Scouts and 10 Explorers for an action-packed week: Sailing, Kayaking, Gig pulling, Water/Land Hiking.  Our theme was Pirates of the Caribbean.  We camped in a field adjacent to the ‘Outdoor + Active’ centre which is run by the South West Lakes Trust.  We had traditional Scout camping activities including games, sports, cooking and camp fires, with lots of opportunities to do loads of badges.

Roadford Lake Country Park is, between Okehampton & Launceston, Devon PL16 0JL

Easter Camp 2013

We camped at Walton Firs in Cobham over the Easter weekend, from 9am on Good Friday to 4pm on Easter Monday.  It was freezing (literally).

The Archery, shooting, climbing, abseiling and caving were very exciting and the assault course at Walton Firs was a tough one.  There were plenty of badges to be earned and fun to be had.  We roasted pork on a spit roast over an open fire.

Notes:

This list can be cut down as appropriate for weekend or overnight camps. Mark your equipment with your initials etc. All kit to be packed in one bag. Uniform (except caps) is to be worn on the journeys both ways.

If weather conditions are poor, warm clothing will be essential. Many small layers are better than few thicker ones. You will need a set of good waterproofs and decent boots. Hat and gloves are useful too. Remember all your boating clothes may be wet after the first activity, so a second set is necessary for other activities. For summer camp remember plenty of T-shirts and shorts, sun cream and a cap or sun hat.

Penknives are only allowed at camp with permission and must not be worn as part of uniform. Other knives are generally not permitted.

Radios, electronic games and mobile phones are not permitted at camp as they frequently are lost or broken. All telephone contact with home should be through the leaders and/or the campsite pay-phone, not mobiles.

There is a substantial amount of lost property without a nametag after every camp. Write or sew a name onto everything to ensure its safe return.
